Lake edge and bushland at a reservoir park

Destination

Lysterfield Park

South-east Melbourne’s busy, well-signed network.

Lysterfield Park is the other Melbourne day. Parks Victoria locates it on Horswood Road, Lysterfield, on Bunurong and Wurundjeri Country, in the southern foothills of the Dandenong Ranges.

Official facts we will keep repeating

  • 24 km of purpose-built mountain bike trail
  • State Mountain Bike Course, 2006 Commonwealth Games venue
  • Green through black-diamond signage
  • 6 km Lake Circuit Trail
  • Two lakeside picnic areas with toilets, tables and electric barbecues
  • Dogs not allowed
  • Kangaroos and wallabies active morning and evening
  • Best MTB conditions after winter / early spring rain
  • Summer: limited parking, arrive early, backup plan, no illegal roadside parking

Deer-control overnight closures have been published for the northern conservation zone on named nights. Read the live page before a dawn start.

How to use the park

If you are new, stay on signed green trail and the lake circuit. If you already race, the Games course and black features are why this park stays busy. If the car park is full, Parks Victoria’s line is blunt: the park is too. Cardinia Reservoir Park and Dandenong Police Paddocks are the suggested alternatives.

The tour product is /lysterfield-1-day. The long explainer is Lysterfield park trails. Compare with You Yangs on You Yangs vs Lysterfield.

Reading the park like a regular

Lysterfield rewards people who treat it as a stacked system rather than a single famous loop. The lake circuit is the social ride and the wildlife walk. The purpose-built MTB trails are the reason the car park fills before 10 am in January. The Games course is a historic layer, not a carnival ride you owe a guest.

Parks Victoria’s water safety note applies if anyone swims: the lake is not patrolled. A bike tour that ends with a jump off the bank is a different risk conversation from a bike tour that ends at a barbecue.

The northern conservation zone closures for deer control are overnight windows on named dates. They are easy to miss if you only screenshot the trail map in November and drive over in August. Refresh the park page the week you ride.

Why it still belongs on a Melbourne menu

Twenty-four kilometres is smaller than You Yangs and much smaller than Buller. It is also closer to a huge south-east population, which is why the official copy calls it one of Australia’s busier mountain bike networks. Busy is a planning fact. Arrive early or pick You Yangs. Do not invent a secret gate.

Barbecues have been temporarily closed during statewide inspections — the park page has carried that notice. Carry food that does not depend on a working hotplate.
