You Yangs Regional Park

Granite peaks, two precincts, an hour from Melbourne.

You Yangs Regional Park is the west-of-Melbourne mountain bike day that the old tour menu treated as default. Parks Victoria’s page is the source for every figure on this hub.

The park sits on Wadawurrung Country at 5 Branch Road, Little River. Gates are published as 7.00 am–8.00 pm. Flinders Peak is the high point: Parks Victoria describes a walk from Turntable car park with 450 steps and about 200 m of elevation. That walk is not a bike trail. The mountain bike story is elsewhere in the granite.

Why riders come

Parks Victoria calls the You Yangs a mecca for walkers, horse riders and mountain bikers. The bike-specific page states two designated areas and over 50 kilometres of signed, graded, environmentally designed trail, built with You Yangs MTB Inc and Geelong Mountain Bike Club. Kurrajong Plantation is the flatter 20 km, three-loop classroom. Stockyards is the northern technical half, with downhill tracks and rocky singletrack.

More than 200 bird species have been recorded. Koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, possums, echidnas and lizards are commonly seen. About 30 orchid species include the endangered brittle greenhood. Dogs are welcome on lead. Picnic among nine designated areas. The Great Circle Drive is the car option if someone in the group is not riding.

How this hub connects to the old site

The tour product remains at /you-yangs. The map explainer is at You Yangs trail map. This destination page is for people who arrived via a region query, not a booking query.

Summer weekends fill Turntable. Parks Victoria’s own safety note: arrive early, use Lower Picnic overflow, or walk Big Rock. Gate close during daylight saving is listed as 8 pm. There is no firewood collection. Fires only in fireplaces, with water to put them out.

A full day on the ground

Give the park a whole day even if you only came for a morning loop. Kurrajong can eat two hours if you ride all three plantation loops without sprinting. Stockyards can eat the afternoon if you treat the official downhill tracks as optional rather than mandatory. The visitor guide is the document that decides whether a line you remember from a club map is still a bike trail or has been handed back to walkers.

Water and shade are not evenly spread. Carry more than you think in January. Parks Victoria’s summer note is written for walkers as much as riders: the park is popular, Turntable fills, and the overflow at Lower Picnic is the civilised option. If you ignore that and circle on Branch Road you become the problem the rangers already described.

Flinders Peak is worth the walk on a non-riding morning. It is 450 steps and about 200 metres of climbing from Turntable. Leave the bike. The view toward Melbourne and Geelong is the reason the granite was a lookout long before it was a trail network.

Great Circle Drive is how non-riders stay in the day without standing in a car park. Horse trails are signed separately. The park asks mountain bikers not to invent hybrid lines between those systems. That is how networks stay open.

Country and conduct

Wadawurrung connection to this landscape is not a footnote. Parks Victoria’s park page opens with it. Ride signed dirt, keep dogs on lead, take waste out, and stay off orchid habitat. The brittle greenhood is not a Strava segment.

Licensed tour operators work across Victorian parks under a statewide program. If you book a commercial day, ask the operator how they sit with that system. This website will not flash a licence number we have not checked this season.

Autumn and winter are the seasons Parks Victoria names for firmer, less dusty mountain bike dirt. That does not make a July afternoon warm. Bring layers.
