The You Yangs are the granite islands you see from the Princes Freeway when the light is low. Parks Victoria manages You Yangs Regional Park on Wadawurrung Country at 5 Branch Road, Little River. Opening hours on the official page are 7.00 am to 8.00 pm daily. Flinders Peak and Big Rock look toward Melbourne; the park office and visitor centre sit inside that same granite basin.
This URL is the 2016–2020 day-tour page. The product was an on-demand cross-country day, meeting idea at Turntable Drive, green and blue riding with optional black, roughly a half-day of pedalling. We keep the path and the idea. We do not keep the archived from-price.
The two mountain bike precincts
Parks Victoria’s mountain biking page is the source for every distance on this page.
The park has two designated mountain biking areas and over 50 kilometres of signed, graded trail. Maps are available at the Park Office and in the visitor guide. Ride only formally signed trails. Informal lines are asked to stay unused so the designed network can remain open.
Kurrajong Plantation is the flatter classroom. Parks Victoria describes about 20 kilometres across three loop tracks through eucalypt plantation. It is written for family groups and first mountain bike days, and for fitter riders who want to sit on the gas without a granite rock garden.
Stockyards, in the north of the park, is the testing half. The official copy mentions flowing singletrack, steep technical sections, rocky ground, three downhill tracks and a spread of cross-country lines. Named tracks on the Parks Victoria list include Rockwell Run, Lactic Acid, Boulder Track and Trilogy. The 2019 tour page also used Kurrajong Plantation, Stockyards, Rockwell Run, Lumberjack, Axeman and Inner Loop as the spoken menu. Some of those names remain on club maps; always match what the current visitor guide prints.
How a guided day still makes sense
A self-guided You Yangs visit is straightforward: download the guide, pick Kurrajong or Stockyards, bring water. A guided day is for groups who want a Melbourne-side pickup, a bike that is already sized, or a first visit where someone else holds the map.
The historic day talked about a CBD start. Directory listings from the same era used 42 Macaulay Street, Williamstown North as the workshop address. Treat both as archive notes. Confirm the meeting point on the enquiry. Do not assume Space Hotel or any other 2019 pickup is still live.
Typical shape, not a promise:
- Meet, set saddle height, talk through park rules
- Warm up on signed green or blue at Kurrajong
- Move to Stockyards only if the group is reading the terrain
- Picnic area time — Parks Victoria lists nine designated picnic sites
- Return before gate close
Parks Victoria notes the park is busy in summer, especially on weekends. Arrive early. If Turntable car park is full, the official advice is the Lower Picnic Area overflow — or walk Big Rock instead of circling for a park.
Country, wildlife, other users
The park is an Aboriginal cultural landscape. Parks Victoria asks visitors to respect Wadawurrung connection to Country. More than 200 bird species have been recorded. Koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, possums, echidnas and lizards are commonly seen. Dogs are welcome on lead; pick up waste. Other signed trails are for walkers or horses only — stay off those.
The endangered brittle greenhood is one of about 30 orchid species in the park. That is a conservation fact, not a reason to leave the trail.
What we will not put on this page
- A current dollar figure
- A claim that this is Australia’s best park
- A shuttle price copied from another operator’s Google result
- A promise that every historic trail name still exists
