Where can I mountain bike near Melbourne?

Parks Victoria documents two purpose-built networks close to the city: You Yangs Regional Park, about an hour west, with over 50 km of signed trail in two precincts, and Lysterfield Park in the south-east foothills, with 24 km of mountain bike trail including the former 2006 Commonwealth Games course.

How many kilometres of trail are at the You Yangs?

Parks Victoria: over 50 kilometres across two designated areas. Kurrajong Plantation is about 20 km of flatter loops. Stockyards, in the north, is more technical and includes downhill tracks.

Is there a You Yangs trail map?

Yes. Parks Victoria says a map can be picked up at the Park Office or downloaded with the visitor guide. Ride only formally signed trails.

How many kilometres of trail are at Lysterfield?

Parks Victoria: 24 km of purpose-built mountain bike trail, plus a 6 km Lake Circuit.

When is Lysterfield best to ride?

Parks Victoria: after the rain of winter and early spring the mountain bike trails are at their best. Summer is busy and parking fills.

Are dogs allowed?

You Yangs: dogs on lead, waste taken with you (Parks Victoria). Lysterfield: dogs are not allowed. Alpine resorts publish their own pet rules — read the resort page.

How far is Mt Buller from Melbourne?

Mt Buller: about three hours.

How much trail is at Mt Buller?

The resort publishes more than 100 km of summer bike trails, including the 46 km Australian Alpine Epic.

What is the Australian Alpine Epic?

Mt Buller: a 46 km advanced wilderness trail, the Southern Hemisphere’s first IMBA Epic, from the mountain toward Mirimbah. Check the live trail report. The Mirimbah return shuttle is a separate ticket.

Does Mt Buller have a chairlift or gravity shuttle for bikes?

Yes, on published summer operating days: Northside Express and a gravity shuttle, typically described as 10 am–4 pm. Confirm the calendar. Trails can be listed closed outside the season.

How much trail is at Falls Creek?

Falls Creek Alpine Resort: 50 km gravity network, World Trail built, ride-in / ride-out village. More than 10 km is described as beginner-friendly.

What trails are in Bright?

Victoria’s High Country and Elevation describe Mystic Bike Park: 20+ trails, about 450 m of elevation, year-round shuttles when the operator is running.

What is Beechworth MTB Park like?

Official High Country listing: granite rock rolls, pinch climbs, skills zone, green loop, two XC loops, a gravity loop; open year-round; often better after rain.

Is there a best MTB park in Australia?

No official ranking exists. Match travel time, season and skill. This site will not invent a number one.

Guided or self-guided?

Self-guided works on well-signed parks (You Yangs, Lysterfield, Mystic). Guided trips help with High Country logistics, hire and first alpine visits. See the comparison.

Do I need my own bike?

No. Hire exists in Melbourne and in trail towns. We do not list hire prices here. See bike hire.

What does a multi-day trip include?

Historically: guided riding, transfers, meals and nights of lodging. Confirm current inclusions when you enquire. Archived 2019 package prices are not current.

Are children allowed?

The original operator’s published T&Cs snapshot excluded riders under 15. Independent families should follow each park’s guidance and their own insurance. We will not invent a minimum age for 2026.

When should I avoid alpine trails?

When the resort trail report says closed; on Extreme or Code Red fire days (CFA); and outside the published summer window, which the High Country listing summarises as roughly November–April for Buller and Falls Creek.

How do I book?

Use booking or contact. This is an enquiry, not a live checkout.
