A tour URL tells you how many days you have. A destination URL tells you why the dirt is there. This hub is new, but every place on it appeared on the 2019 site.
Close to Melbourne. You Yangs for granite and two signed precincts. Lysterfield for the Games course and a lake circuit. Both are Parks Victoria, both are day-trip distance, both have visitor guides you should download before you argue about a line.
Alpine and High Country. Mount Buller for a hundred published kilometres and a chairlift calendar. Bright for Mystic. Beechworth for granite that likes rain. Mount Beauty for Big Hill. Falls Creek for a fifty-kilometre gravity village. The High Country page holds the district together so you can see the driving.
We do not rank these parks. We tell you what their managers published, and we link the tour shape that used to start from Melbourne CBD.\n
How to choose a first hub
If you have never ridden dirt in Victoria, start with travel time rather than reputation. You Yangs is the west-side granite day with two official precincts and a visitor guide that is actually maintained. Lysterfield is the south-east lake day with a Games-course history and a car park that fills. Neither is “better.” They are closer than any alpine resort and they run in more months of the year.
If you already ride intermediate trail at home and you can move in November through April, add an alpine hub. Mt Buller is the three-hour drive with a chairlift calendar and an IMBA Epic. Falls Creek is the village that starts and finishes its gravity network at the lodges. Bright is the year-round pine hill. Beechworth is the granite that likes rain. Mount Beauty is the hinge.
What “official” means on this site
When we say Parks Victoria, we mean the live park page, not a forum memory. When we say Mt Buller, we mean the summer bike page and the trail report table with lengths. When we say Victoria’s High Country, we mean the public MTB parks listing that also includes places we do not sell as core tours. If those pages change a kilometre figure, they win.
We will not stitch a fake “Victoria’s top ten” out of those sources. Rankings are how thin rebuilds get written. Hubs are how you keep old URLs honest.
Pairing hubs with tour URLs
- You Yangs hub → /you-yangs
- Lysterfield hub → /lysterfield-1-day
- Mount Buller hub → /mount-buller and the weekender
- Bright / Beechworth / Mount Beauty / Falls Creek → /north-east-wild-week
- The whole district plus Buller → /ultimate-mountain-bike-roadtrip
Read the regions guide if you want the comparison essay. Use this index if you already know the town name.
Season still decides more than branding. A July High Country plan that assumes Falls Creek is open is a brochure, not a trip. A November plan that checks two trail reports and still has Beechworth as a wet-weather spare is how the 2019 menu actually worked. Use the hubs to collect facts. Use the tour URLs to collect days. Use the FAQ if you only needed a sentence.
Reading order if you have one evening
Start with the Melbourne pair if you have not ridden dirt this year. Read You Yangs for precincts and the visitor guide habit. Read Lysterfield for the Games-course context and the car-park rule. Only then open Bright or Buller. Alpine pages assume you already know what a graded sign is.
If you already ride Mystic monthly, skip to Falls Creek’s season window and Buller’s ticket split. The destination index is a filing cabinet. Pull the folder that matches the month you can actually travel.
Non-riders in a group should read the picnic and village paragraphs, not the gravity lists. A destination hub that only speaks to the strongest rider is how vans arrive with one person who never wanted to come.
