Lysterfield 1-day mountain bike tour

Lake, kangaroos, and a purpose-built network that still wears its Games history.

Lysterfield Park is the south-east answer to a Melbourne mountain bike day. Parks Victoria describes a park rising from the southern foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, on the traditional Country of the Bunurong People and the Wurundjeri People. The published trailhead address is Horswood Road, Lysterfield VIC 3156.

This URL is the Wix 1-day product. The historic copy used Horswood Road, named Switchback, Redgum, Hug Track, Coms Game Circuit and the lake boardwalk, and sold an on-demand XC day. We keep the path and the geography. We do not keep the archived from-price.

What Parks Victoria actually publishes

The official park page is unusually specific, which is useful:

  • 24 km of purpose-built mountain bike trails for a spread of skills
  • Home to one of Australia’s busier mountain bike networks, including the State Mountain Bike Course, a venue at the 2006 Commonwealth Games
  • Easy green trails and black-diamond lines for experienced riders
  • A 6 km Lake Circuit Trail for walking, running or riding among native vegetation
  • Two picnic areas on the lake shore with toilets, tables and electric barbecues
  • Kangaroos and wallabies commonly seen in morning and evening; also koalas, echidnas, wombats and platypus in the broader park story
  • Dogs are not allowed
  • After winter and early spring rain, “the mountain bike trails of Lysterfield are at their best”
  • Summer is busy, parking is limited, arrive early, have a backup; if the car park is full, the park is treated as full

Those are not our adjectives. They are the land manager’s.

How the day still works

A guided Lysterfield day is for people who want a bike, a lift from the city side, or a first look at a stacked, well-signed network. Self-guided riders can use the visitor guide PDF linked from the Parks Victoria page.

A sensible shape:

  1. Confirm the Horswood Road entry is open and that no deer-control night closure affects the morning (Parks Victoria has published overnight closures in the northern conservation zone on named dates — read the live page)
  2. Start on signed green trail to set brakes and seat height
  3. Build into the intermediate loops if the group is clean on corners
  4. Leave the black-diamond and Games-course features for riders who already ride that terrain at home
  5. Finish on the Lake Circuit if legs and daylight remain

The old page’s trail names are useful colour. They are not a substitute for the current map. Networks get realigned. Ride the signs.

Water, heat, and a backup plan

Lysterfield Lake is a natural water body. Parks Victoria warns that it is not patrolled and that children need supervision. Sailing, kayaking and canoeing are listed activities; they are not part of a bike tour unless you add them yourself.

Summer advice from the park: arrive before the rush (they mention before 10 am in the safety notes), do not park illegally on narrow roads, and consider Cardinia Reservoir Park or Dandenong Police Paddocks if Lysterfield is full. That last sentence is why a guided day should hold a backup, not a guarantee.
