Mt Buller is the Victorian alpine resort that publishes enough trail data to write a guide without guessing. The source pages are Things to do | Bike, the bike trail report and the maps page. Lengths and skill labels below are copied from that public table, not from a marketing mood.
The number that matters first
The resort says more than 100 km of trails, about three hours from Melbourne. That hundred kilometres is not one park loop. It is village greens, intermediate XC, wilderness, and a gravity face with its own uplift.
The October 2026 report we fetched listed the network closed. Read that sentence again if you are planning a random Thursday in the shoulder. High Country tourism copy summarises the bike season as approximately November–April. Opening days inside that window still belong to the calendar.
Village greens — the on-ramp
From the official table:
- Family Trail — beginner, 3 km
- Picnic Trail — beginner, 0.45 km
- One Tree Hill — beginner, 0.63 km
- Soul Revival — beginner, 0.45 km
- Pump Track — beginner
These are how you learn the mountain’s signage without collecting a chairlift story you cannot finish. A weekender that skips them on Friday afternoon usually spends Saturday morning doing them anyway, with more pride injured.
Intermediate XC — where most groups should live
Named intermediates on the report include Box Corner Link (0.7 km), Clancy’s Run (2 km), Cornhill Trail (1 km), Delatite River Trail (12 km), Gang Gangs (1.4 km), Medusa (0.75 km), Misty Twist (2.6 km), Plough Shed Entry to DRT (2.7 km), River Spur (2.5 km), Snowgums (1.1 km), Split Rock (0.9 km), Trigger Happy (2.2 km), Wombat (0.43 km), Woody’s Shortcut (1.2 km) and Woolybutt (1.7 km).
That list is the 2019 tour page’s vocabulary: Clancy’s, Misty Twist, Medusa, DRT. The resort also notes most trails are shared with walkers, runners and horse riders. Give horses room. Take earbuds out on blind corners.
Delatite River Trail is the long intermediate that pulls people toward the valley. The resort warns about log bridges. The Mirimbah Shuttle — published sample times 9 am, 11.20 am, 2:40 pm, 5 pm on operating days — is how you avoid a three-hour road climb back. It is not included in a standard MTB uplift ticket.
Advanced wilderness
- Stonefly — advanced, 10 km
- Australian Alpine Epic — advanced, 46 km
The Epic is the Southern Hemisphere’s first IMBA Epic on the resort’s own wording. It is a remote day toward Mirimbah, not a village lap. See /mt-buller-epic. First aid during gravity uplift does not follow you onto the Epic. Emergencies: 000 plus the nearest marker. Resort Management 03 5777 6077 in published hours (weekdays 8:30–5, weekends and public holidays 10–4 on the page we read).
Gravity
- ABOM — intermediate, 2.2 km
- Copperhead — intermediate, 2.5 km — described as Australia’s first flow trail
- Outlaw — intermediate, 2 km
- International — advanced, 2 km
Uplift on published summer days:
- Northside Express quad, about 7 minutes, 1270 m, 10:00–4:00, Horse Hill–Chalet Creek–Spurs
- Gravity shuttle, 10 am–4 pm loops, Lower Tyrol to Copperhead / ABOM / Outlaw Express / International
- Load tickets to a B-Tag
- Season pass language for riders doing more than six days
The 2026 copy mentioned a 5 December chairlift opening target and about 10 km of new trail planned, including Plough trails under development and not accessible. Planned dirt is not rideable dirt.
Rules that are not house style
- Helmet to Australian safety standard on all trails
- Full-face and pads strongly recommended on gravity
- Pedal-assist e-bikes EN15194 or ≤250 W; no throttle
- Suitable mountain bike with front and rear suspension recommended on downhill
- Avoid Extreme / Code Red fire days (CFA North East)
- Alpine weather can freeze or snow in summer
- Public notices (water, access) live on alpineresorts.vic.gov.au
Hire: the resort notes All Terrain Cycles when open on the mountain. We will not print their rate card.
How to spend two or three days
Day 1: village greens, one intermediate stitch, optional single gravity lap if uplift is running. Day 2: XC cluster — Misty Twist, Woolybutt, Clancy’s, maybe Stonefly. Day 3: DRT plus Mirimbah shuttle, or the Epic if the group is actually advanced and the report is open.
That is the weekender logic. A Maximum Gravity day is the same mountain with a different ticket.
What this guide refuses
A live status widget we cannot maintain. A ranking against Falls Creek. A 2019 package price. A claim that International is always the one to film.

Plough trails and other unfinished sentences
The 2025–26 ride guide and maps page mention Plough 1, 2 and 3 as under construction and not accessible. “New trails planned” on a resort homepage is a future tense. This guide will not send you into a worksite because a PDF thumbnail looked like a trail.
If you ride Buller over several summers, expect names to appear. Recheck the report. Do not keep a 2024 offline map as authority.
How shared use actually feels
The resort’s sharing paragraph is easy to skip. On the Delatite River Trail it is the whole character of the day: walkers on log bridges, horses on linking tracks, runners who live in Mansfield and do not care about your Strava. Call out. Slow to a walk if a horse is unsettled. The mountain will still be there.
Gravity trails feel less shared until a sightseeing rider walks into a landing. Uplift hours concentrate people. The first run after 10 am is not a private race.
Fitness versus skill on the Epic
Forty-six kilometres of advanced wilderness is both. Riders who can do a hundred road kilometres sometimes cannot manage alpine rock at hour four. Riders who can ride International sometimes cannot manage the navigation and weather. The Epic is a separate decision from “we are strong.” Read /mt-buller-epic again the night you pack the lights you probably will not use if you left on time — and will need if you did not.
Tickets, B-Tags, and the village hour before 10 am
Uplift on the 2026 copy starts at 10 am. The hour before that is not wasted if you treat it as village greens and coffee. It is wasted if you queue for a shuttle that has not started. Load the B-Tag the way the resort describes. Watch their how-to-load-a-bike video if you have not used a chair with a downhill bike.
Sightseeing tickets exist for the person who drove and will not ride International. That person is not a problem. They are how groups stay kind.
Mansfield, Mirimbah, and the valley story
Not every Buller day ends in the village. DRT and the Epic point down. Mirimbah Store is a real place with a real shuttle timetable on operating days. Missing the last listed departure (5 pm on the sample 2026 list) is a road-climb or a very expensive phone call. Write the times on paper.
Mansfield and the valley towns hold beds when the mountain is sold out. They also add a morning climb you must budget. The resort is honest that both on-mountain and valley lodging exist. Choose with the first trail in mind, not the last dessert.
Field essay — the mountain as a timetable
Buller punishes people who treat it like a trail centre with extra altitude. Uplift has a start and a finish. Mirimbah has four example departures. Daylight dies behind ridges. The Epic does not care that you planned to “see how we go.” Write times. Then write earlier times.
The village hour before 10 am is the hidden gift. Family Trail in cold air teaches you whether today’s dirt is dusty, tacky or frozen. That sentence is worth more than a first-chair sprint on ABOM with frozen fingers.
If you only remember three official lengths, remember these: Family 3 km, DRT 12 km, Epic 46 km. They are the on-ramp, the intermediate journey, and the wilderness day. Everything else is seasoning.
Questions this guide should answer out loud
Is Copperhead a beginner trail? The resort lists it as intermediate gravity, 2.5 km, and calls it Australia’s first flow trail. That is not Family Trail. Start on Family.
Can I ride the Epic without the Mirimbah shuttle? Yes, if you enjoy a very long return. The resort sells the shuttle as the civilized option and says it is a separate ticket.
Are e-bikes allowed? Pedal-assist meeting EN15194 or ≤250 W. No throttle. Hire exists on-mountain when All Terrain Cycles is open.
What if the October report is closed? Then the mountain is closed for bikes. Go to Bright or ride You Yangs. Do not invent a thaw.
Where do I send a non-rider? Sightseeing lift tickets and village walks. Not the middle of International.
Those answers are enough for a van brief. The table of lengths remains the long form.
